On May 18, 2022, a U.S. resident was tested positive for monkeypox after returning to the U.S. from Canada, which has attracted extensive attention. In most cases, Monkeypox infection is only found in Africa, thus this case is presumably linked to international travel or imported animals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)[1] is also tracking multiple clusters of monkeypox infection that have been reported from early to mid-May in Europe and North America.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO)[2], the case fatality ratio has been recently reported around 3–6% and it might be higher among young children. People with Monkeypox virus will have the symptoms like fever, intense headache, lymphadenopathy, back pain, myalgia and lacking energy at the onset of infection. Then the rashes appear and evolves sequentially from macules (lesions with a flat base) to papules (slightly raised firm lesions), vesicles (lesions filled with clear fluid), pustules (lesions filled with yellowish fluid), and crusts which dry up and fall off eventually. The typical symptoms last from 2 to 4 weeks. There are two ways of the transmission have been identified so far. The Animal-to-human transmission can occur from direct contact with the blood, bodily fluids, or cutaneous or mucosal lesions of infected animals, whereas the Human-to-human transmission can result from lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets and contaminated materials such as bedding. The incubation period (interval from the infection to the onset of symptoms) of monkeypox is usually from 6 to 13 days but can range from 5 to 21 days.
